Psychotherapy for individuals, couples and families

At times we all find ourselves seeking balance. Even the strongest relationships go through difficult periods and, if the couple has children, they always react in some way. Some losses and life crises are harder to move forward from than others. Many external stressors are beyond our control.

Sometimes the stressors come from within – past experiences affecting well-being and relationships today, negative self-talk, high demands for oneself, or e.g. adjusting to a recent ADHD diagnosis. Different stages in life bring along unique developmental tasks. Many of my clients are young adults finding their way, navigating studies, building their careers, or starting their first serious relationships.

However, we can influence our mindset, emotions, thought patterns, reactions, and choices. We can heal, learn, grow, and reconnect. Sometimes it helps to have a professional as a guide and a source of support.

THE frameWORK

Cognitive analytic brief psychotherapy, emotionally focused couples therapy, and systemic, solution-focused family therapy are evidence-based therapeutic approaches. They are designed to utilize your strengths, help you recognise behavioural patterns, deepen your self-awareness and understanding of others, and equip you with skills that will benefit you long after therapy ends. Each of these modalities emphasises the significance of relationships in well-being, aiming to understand the client’s situation holistically, examine relational dynamics, and identify and modify thought and behaviour patterns that sustain difficulties and symptoms. Across all these approaches, the development of emotional and interpersonal skills is a central focus. In addition, I use the experiential social-emotional learning and therapy methodology EASEL.

Brief psychotherapy is suitable for treating mild to moderate anxiety, depression, and burnout, supporting you through grief and life changes, identifying triggers from your past that influence your reactions and relationships today, strengthening emotion regulation, and much more. Emotionally focused couples therapy aims to break disruptive negative patterns, heal accumulated wounds, and restore a sense of safety and closeness to the relationship. Systemic family therapy examines family dynamics and seeks to restore healthy dynamics and feelings of safety and closeness among parents and children. I am also experienced with the unique challenges of expatriate life and blended families.

Mari has the heart, the skills, and the tools to create positive change – regardless of a person’s age, profession, gender, or cultural background – and even in the most difficult situations.

consultations, processes and tailored intensives

You can book just one consultation, a videocall on a highly secure platform or join me at Savikko Farm in Vihti, an hour west of Helsinki. If you need more support, the length and frequency of your process are then tailored to your needs month by month.

You can also book a private intensive at Savikko, where we work on your topics without time constraints and can use experiential EASEL activities and nature to support your process. Your intensive can be a half or full-day, or a longer retreat where you rest and experience Helsinki in the evenings at a hotel of your choice. Or, in the summer months, stay at a cottage by a lake or HillSide Golf Club next door playing golf in the evenings.

THE WAY i WORK

I walk alongside you as a source of support, a listener, a sounding board, and a guide. I also share with you psychoeducational tools that help you understand how your mind and nervous system work. And we practice ways to calm the autonomic nervous system and release stress and anxiety. You'll understand yourself and others better, clarify your vision and healthy boundaries, and strengthen your emotional and relational skills.  You'll take back your power over your wellbeing and find your next steps towards building the kind of life and relationships you want.

In the late 1990s, I taught a special education class in middle school. One Friday, inspired by Himalayan sherpas, the teens wrote in their class journal how they choose the mountains they want to summit. My job is to help them pack the right gear, ensure their safety along the way, provide extra oxygen when needed, help carry their “stuff”, read the weather, and know the best climbing routes.

So, you choose the mountain. I am here to guide and support you along the way.

A huge thank you again for our session last week. It was incredibly helpful, and I’ve been feeling better than I have in a long time.
